What does my shed or pole barn have to look like?

Four requirements from the Accessory Building Regulations, plus the Committee's judgment.

- **A minimum overhang of 1 foot on all sides.** This also matters for your setbacks, which are measured at the drip edge rather than the wall — so the overhang effectively pushes the building a foot further from each line.
- **At least one man-door** for entry and egress. A building with only a large overhead door does not meet this.
- **Windows are not required** unless local or State building codes or ordinances require them.
- **Size, materials, design and colour should conform with neighbouring structures**, to maintain aesthetic continuity within the community.

**The Architectural Committee has final approval of all design features.** That is stated in the regulations, and it is the reason to bring your proposal early rather than after ordering.

**Height.** Between 8 and 14 feet, measured to the midpoint between eaves and ridge on a gable, hip or gambrel roof.

**Lighting.** If exterior security or motion lights are installed, shielding is required to prevent light pollution reaching neighbouring properties.

**Never lived in.** Accessory buildings may not be occupied for dwelling purposes at any time — including temporarily or occasionally.

**If you are buying a prefabricated building**, check the overhang, height and door arrangement against these before you order. Standard models do not always comply.
