Frequently Asked Questions:

What is required for the ride?

  • You'll need a dirt bike, ATV (quad, 3-wheeler), UTV (Side-by-side), or some suitable off-road vehicle for this ride. A golf cart is not suitable. Everyone should have valid Michigan ORV and ORV Trail stickers on your vehicle, but that is between you and the DNR to sort out. We do require, however, that all riders observe all helmet and eye protection laws, as well as road signage when we are on the roads. All drivers and passengers will be required to sign a waiver of liability (available for download or at registration).

What is the parking situation for trucks and trailers?

  • We have a large enough parking area for vehicles and trailers such that we could accommodate more than 100 riders and all their gear; this should not be an issue.

How is the ride structured?

  • We will plan to have a "fast" 70-mile group and a "slow" 50-mile group, with the fast group leaving just a few minutes ahead of the slower riders. In addition to having physical maps at registration and for electronic download, we will also have GPX files that drivers can download and follow on their GPS devices or phones using free software such as Polaris Ride Command, On X Offroad, etc. We will also have ride leaders and sweepers on both rides equipped with GMRS radios for communication and coordination during the ride. Both rides should finish near the same time back at the starting location. From there we will have grilled food for purchase, drinks, raffles, music, and a bonfire.

How fast will the ride be, and what happens if I get lost?

  • It's difficult to put a number to it, as it will depend on trail conditions and the size of each group. The fast group will be spirited, but this is a social ride and not a race and will be in the 25mph average range. We will be stopping to regroup, especially after crossing any major roads (M-61 twice). The slower group will be 10-15 mph average and mostly intended for those who might be unsure of their skills, those riding a utility vehicle not intended for bombing over terrain such as this, or for those who just want a more social pace to see the trails and enjoy some spring air.

Will there be any fuel stops?

  • Please make sure your vehicles are topped off for fuel in the parking lot, because we do not have a planned fuel stop on either ride. However, if you've got a fuel need, we will be within 1/4 mile of the Leota Pit Stop station twice on both distance rides. You can peel off if needed to get fuel and continue on the mapped routes or have someone else carry a jerry can and use it during a trailside stop. Most modern UTV's should not have any issue covering 70 miles on a full tank, but if you're on a quad or dirt bike a fuel can may be desired.

What if I break down?

  • Many of us ride with repair tool rolls, jacks, flat fix kits, first aid kits, etc. and the community does a great job in supporting riders finding themselves in need after a breakdown. Breakdowns happen. If it is minor in nature, we can likely fix it trail side and will hold up the group if we can do it quickly. If it is major, someone from the ride (likely the sweeper) will try to assist with towing the vehicle out of the trails to the nearest road and the rest of the group will continue. We will assist or arrange pickup of the driver to get back to the start location to retrieve their truck/trailer so they can pick up their disabled vehicle. Lake of the Pines assumes no responsibility for any loss or damage incurred to the vehicle or its occupants during this ride or during any attempt to help you tow it out.

What is the situation on alcohol for this event?

  • No alcohol should be consumed before or during the ride in order to maximize the safety of all participants. We do not check anyone's vehicle and leave it up to participants to make good decisions. For the grill-and-chill after ride event, please feel free to bring your own alcohol to go with the food and exercise good judgment in our community, and don't drink and drive. If you need to have a ride called for you, please contact any Lake of the Pines participant or volunteer for assistance - we want to see all of you back safely for next year's ride!

What are the funds raised being used for, who benefits?

  • This event is being put on by the Lake of the Pines Men's Club. We are a private non-profit social club in Clare County which raises funds for various causes throughout the year. We fundraise for Joshua's House in Clare - a maternity home for expectant mothers, we financially support local families struggling with sudden losses or medical debt, Toys for Tots drives, Jackets and gloves drives for local homeless shelters, and a variety of other causes to help our friends in our neighboring community. Proceeds from this and other Men's Club events throughout the year will be used to support our community through these and other efforts.
